Mark Your Calendars!

That's right, it's that time of year again... February 12th is Darwin Day!

What are you going to do to celebrate? A list of event possibilities is on the site. How about an (evolutionary) Darwin Day Tree? Place amphibians at the bottom and primates at the top! Put it in water, throw in some algae and brine shrimp and Bam! You've got an ecosystem!

This year will be especially significant, because we have an actual monkey in the White House!

Here's a thought... How about spreading the Good News of Darwin to every Evalgelical Christian blog you find? Think of it as missionary work. Save the creationists from a life of dependency on magic and myth. Save them from the magical creatures they imagine flying through the air, or conducting sadistic rituals below the surface of the earth. Save them and help them to evolve.

"Go now, brothers and sisters, heal and be healed!"

This is another public service announcement from me.

That is some really mean stuff, especially toward Christians. Evangelical Christians are loving, caring people. My church sent millions to the tsunami victims. I just don't understand why you all have to scoff and make fun of people who have religious conviction. I went to the other guys site who commented and he was calling people in red counties rednecks. So much for liberal tolerance.

It was intended as satire, which is often perceived as mean stuff regardless of its intent. If you notice, I am singleing out "evangelical christians." Also, the verbage in question (the paragraph that mentions them) is taken from their own rhetoric and is a pretty tame example, at that.

I don't scoff at religious people in general, but I scoff at evengelicals and I am basing my satire on my personal experience (you and I have been down that road before).

I have seen evangelical christians condemn others, religious and non-, in ways that make this little post sound like a Little Golden book. I have seen them proclaim that anyone who doesn't share their conviction is condemned to hellfire. More than that, they have claimed that those who don't believe as they believe are evil, and doing the work of satan. I have also seen them put everyone else down as "lesser" than they - less enlightened, or whatever. But what really galls me is when they try to turn their religious views into laws that I am forced to follow. That's going too far.

Here is an example of one:

The material there is real hate-speech, not just the usual nickel-and-dime pissed-off-blogger stuff... hers is venomous, and all in the name of christianity.

So, if they can dish it out, they can take it, right?

No problem. But you might be surprised at who all is an evangelical Christian. I am (probably not a surprise)and millions of other Amerians are. Some of them are Democrats. Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter are both Southern Baptists just like me. Most of us watch cable TV and listen to Rock music just like everybody else. This whole conversation really has made me look at my own conduct on this issue. I have probably said similar things about Pentacostals. I understand the satire. I guess religion is just a little more of a sensitive issue than politics.

Indeed. My rebellious side compels me to get satirical about sensitive subjects when propriety dictates I should show some respect...

...but then I think of Keith Moon: "Show some respect! It's a fuckin' opera!"

At least I feel guilty later...

P.S. Don't forget to do your Darwin Day shopping early!

All I'm gonna say is that when Pat Robertson or Jerry Fallwell stand up, they sound like idiots.

Maybe they're right- who knows. But, to me, they sound like idiots.

[for those who wonder what we're talking about here, see http://screwyou.thezeroboss.com/archives/004122.html).

Charone, we'll find a place for yellow... like, if we mix it with blue, we get the color of plants, of Ireland, or of the the Green Party :)

If we mix it with red, we get the color of fire, which can be alternately the most useful or destructive stuff around. Or, the color of the Great Pumpkin, who helped teach people my age, when we were kids, that paganism was okay!

Yellow... where would we be without it?

Mike, Christians do have compassion for civilians who are killed. Nobody wants civilian casualties. We are not at war with the Iraqi people. We went over there to overthrow Saddam (mass graves and rape rooms) and after doing that we have helped those people set up a representative government. I happen to know some Muslim Kurdish people who live in Nashville. They did not exactly understand the war at first, but now they are very happy with the results. They equate Saddam to Hitler. And by the way, in spite of religious differences we get along great. How do you know how much my church gives to help the hungry and victims of natural disasters? Maybe you should come and visit Brentwood Baptist Church to see the things we do to help others. We help all types of people in need in our community and across the world. You don't have to agree with us but I can't see any reason to hate us. Most of us love our wives and love our children and help others. Are we wrong sometimes? Sure. Does that make us hypocrits? If trying to live a certain way and failing makes you a hypocrit, then that is what all of us are. We don't claim to be perfect. There was only one who was perfect and that was Jesus. When I was down and out and locked up, the church members prayed for me and came and visited me. These people are descent and if you needed a hand, they would give it to you also. Look at the Salvation Army and what they do for drug addicts and the homeless and hungry. The Salvation Army is as conservative as they come. I know a lot about them because when I needed to get clean, they got me out of the county jail and gave me a place to stay and recover. Stop hating so much dude. It is going to cause you to bust a vein or something.
