Sadness

It has been ten days or so since I blogged last. I hated to be gone so long, but I got busy with some work stuff and had to prioritize. I'm sure you all understand. Thanks for coming back 8^)

But the reason I have to write a post this evening is because Molly Ivins died.

Molly Ivins was my favorite political columnist. I don't use the word "favorite" lightly. She was consistently brilliant and awe-inspiring. You can read her columns here.

There are very, very few people in the public arena who I cared for enough to be affected by their death. A felt a profound sense of loss when Jim Henson, of all people, died, and I didn't even expect to feel that way, but I did. I was stricken when my idol John Entwistle died, too, although I knew that day would eventually come. Maybe a few others.

But as for Molly... I hadn't even heard she was sick until a few days ago. Now this. Damn. It is particularly saddening that she didn't live long enough to see the end of the Bush "presidency".

The rest of us must carry on. Molly encouraged people to be aware of what was going on politically, and to take an active role when they could. She inspired many of us to do just that. In that way, she will live forever.

I did not realize you were such a huge fan of the bass. I likewise enjoyed Entwhistle. That was "my era". I realize that this is completely different, but I love classic rock and jazz equally. Check this out.

Being caught by surprise by the death of "celebrities" reminds me of how sad I was when Mr. Rogers died. I never expected the level of impact his death had on me. He was such a genteel voice in the midst of the madness that has overtaken the world, a true island of peace for the small child in all of us. I had heard last week that Molly was in trouble, but it was too soon to lose her voice...

I still have a hard time believing Jerry Garcia is gone, but with speedballs ya' gotta expect death knocking at your door.

"Born to Blog, forced to work", right?:) It has that way of screwing up an otherwise good day! Glad you're back. I missed you!!

Molly was one of those so few who could stick her hand in a pail of water, and when she pulls it out, there's a hole left.

She was unwavering, defiant to the end. I should be so lucky as to have 1/100 of her talent for just a day.

Beautiful tribute, SheaNC.

'It is particularly saddening that she didn't live long enough to see the end of the Bush "presidency".'

With this I could not agree more.

Howdy everyone. Thanks for commenting, sorry it took me so long to respond! Cool link there, Rick. And Mike, yeah, Mr. Rogers!

I'll miss her and her courage. I'd known how ill she was but had hope almost to the end.

Went out this week and bought a couple of her books.
