Is the whole country for sale?

Foreign Companies Buy U.S. Roads, Bridges
Roads and bridges built by U.S. taxpayers are starting to be sold off, and so far foreign-owned companies are doing the buying.

On a single day in June, an Australian-Spanish partnership paid $3.8 billion to lease the Indiana Toll Road. An Australian company bought a 99-year lease on Virginia's Pocahontas Parkway, and Texas officials decided to let a Spanish-American partnership build and run a toll road from Austin to Seguin for 50 years.

Few people know that the tolls from the U.S. side of the tunnel between Detroit and Windsor, Canada, go to a subsidiary of an Australian company -- which also owns a bridge in Alabama.
Yup, the global economy begins at home. What did you think that toll money went to pay for the road maintenance?

Have you heard about Redding privatizing their public library and charging to take out books?

I know Shasta County is having problems but surely this is an awful idea.

Here's the link to Delilah Boyd and her post on Redding.

Ah, Shea..I'm as thrilled as you are with privatizing those roads. Nice little deal they've set up so that they'll first raise the tolls, then collect for years and years. But Bush has so deprived States of money that they're desperate and so selling what they can. Two more years and the nation really be in a condition I'd rather not contemplate.
