When the Dust Settles...

Can we still impeach if Dems only control the House, and not the Senate?

With Pelosi at the helm? The House can vote independently of the Senate to bring articles of impeachment against a sitting President, as they did with Clinton. The Senate has to decide whether or not to formalize them. Without the Senate, impeachment is going no where. With Pelosi, WE are going nowhere!

Yes, we can still impeach. We just need a majority. To remove him from office, however, we need 2/3 of the Senate. However, after the trial brings out all the evidence, they'll be forced to do it (as with Nixon).

Take a moment, and help convince Nancy Pelosi to Impeach..

The day the nation demands impeachment is upon us. Sacks and sacks of mail are about to arrive in Nancy Pelosi's office initiating impeachment via the House of Representative's own rules. This legal document is as binding as if a State or if the House itself passed the impeachment resolution (H.R. 635).

There's a little known and rarely used clause of the "Jefferson Manual" in the rules for the House of Representatives which sets forth the various ways in which a president can be impeached. Only the House Judiciary Committee puts together the Articles of Impeachment, but before that happens, someone has to initiate the process.

That's where we come in. In addition to a House Resolution (635), or the State-by-State method, one of the ways to get impeachment going is for individual citizens like you and me to submit a memorial. ImpeachforPeace.org has created a new memorial based on one which was successful in impeaching a federal official in the past. You can find it on their website as a PDF.

You can initiate the impeachment process and simultaneously help to convince Pelosi to follow through with the process. Do-It-Yourself by downloading the memorial, filling in the relevant information in the blanks (your name, state, etc.), and sending it in. Be a part of history.

I don't think Pelosi will go the route of impeachment (for several reasons) but if Bush and Cheney get impeached (and since both are so guilty of so maaany crimes, one would suppose that both would get impeached) that would make Pelosi the President. I think she doesn't want to go that route.

impeach, yes, remove from office, no.

but, that's probably not going to happen.
either way, this is a good morning, though!

peace.

Hill Country Gal: Yes it was! I think the emperor may have finally realized he has no clothes.

Future: Sometime you'll have to educate me about why you dislike Pelosi so much :)

Causal: Thanks for the link. Some are saying we shouldn't pursue impeachment; and Tina makes a good point about why Pelosi might not want it. I'm still in the pro-impeachment camp, though, because I feel that it is absolutely necessary for political behavior such as the Bush administration's to be recognized officially as unacceptable, and also for the guilty to be held accountable. Otherwise, it sends a message that such behavior will always be overlooked, and thus okay. On the other hand, if impeachment would harm our chances in 2008, well, that's another story.

Tina: you make a good point about Pelosi (see above)

Mike V: Ah yes - a happy medium!

Azgoddess: It may be true that it's better to wait... he's leaving, after all... I'll have to do some real pondering on this issue.

It's up to progressives to fan the populist fires. The real work has only just begun. I personally think that we still are in deep doo doo. The signing statements are still in place, the adminstration is still in place, and more importantly the general populace is breathing easy thinking things wil be alright now that the demods are in control. They will not be alright... the corporations are still in control. Anybody notice how giddy wall street was with the results today? The great repudiation of the repukes didn't seem to bother the big boys much did it? The real danger is still with us. We need to focus on reigning in unrestrained corporations, they are the real reason we are in Iraq and the real reason that Iran is next. Don't think that bushco is going to be stopped by the loss of congress. Remember, the Constitution "...is just a goddamn piece of paper!"

That being said, I am just deliriously happy that Santorum, Allen, Delay et al got their asses handed to them on a plate!

Impeachment proceedings begin in the House (I think). It's moot right now because if everything I'm hearing is correct, we took the Senate.

I'll be glad to. Anytime any Democrat states for the record, that they will not impeach the most criminal President in America's history, then they are not a Democrat, but rather a traitor to their country, and I do not forgive traitors. Did you see her press (Hi! I'm Governor Moonbeam's clone!) conference? Not one word about Iraq. Not one word about giving our soldiers proper resources. Not one word about halting the criminal activities of Haliburton. The list of her "oversights" to be kind to the senile woman, goes on endlessly. Her vaunted "first 100 hours" makes no mention whatsoever of our troops, of VA care for them that is in shambles, of corporations that are choking our country to death. She did not get this "landslide" victory to ignore the most pressing problems of this nation. Habeas Corpus has gone by the wayside, and she made no mention of it whatsoever!! She got this landslide for one reason, and one reason only: To cut the balls off the Bulls, and she's already promised not to do that! Those things demonstrate conclusively that she's one of two things: an airhead stuck in the 60's, or a Bush sympathizer in hiding. Either way, she is out of touch with what America wants. I've never met her personally: hopefully God will be good to me and I'll never have to. This isn't personal. This is all about why we worked our asses off for six years for this day, and now that it's here, I absolutely will not let some space cadet float off to Mars with my vote, without screaming about it. If she's not going to listen to the people that put her there, then she needs to go, just like Bush. What did Bush do, when he won in 04 by less than 1%? He swaggered up to the microphones with a sneer, and said; "Now I have political capital, and I intend to spend it", and promptly began to ram shit up America's ass! People seem to forget the top two dogs are self professed Evangelicals, as are most of their supporters in Congress. They don't lose gracefully. They reach deeper in their dirty tricks bag and come out snarling. Pelosi wants to "reach across the aisle." The day she does that, she becomes an amputee with a very enlarged prostrate!! Did THEY, at any time, reach out to us? This isn't the time for pretty. This is the time to smash the remains of the gang that wiped their ass with our constitution, into oblivion. Pelosi will be our death unless she's replaced, or clubbed over the head with reality, you wait and see. She hasn't the slightest grasp of the realities as they currently exist.

And if you feel this is inappropriate in your comment section, then delete it, and there'll be no hard feelings, I assure you. I'll instead address the issue in a post.

Mike: You're right - now's the time to drive home the point that we want real change, not just a cheap facade.

Granny: Looks like we did!

Future: I thank you for your response. I seek knowledge because I have not yet done any thorough research of Pelosi. Now that the Dems are in power and she is speaker of the house, I will forge ahead with a critical eye. I also applaud you for forming an opinion based on your progressive values, and not just following the party platform. Your comment is entirely appropriate in my comment section - no deletions here, man! Thanks again.

Doesn't matter now, we got both! They have their work cut out for them and they better not disappoint.
